    The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall is the longest wall in the world (around 13,170.7 miles) and the main symbol of China. The wall was built by different dynasties over more than 2,300 years. Its main purpose was to protect the country from raids by the nomadic groups from the Eurasian side. Many people tend to visit the Great Wall sections near Beijing.

Time and mobile connection

China covers five time zones, although the official national standard for the whole country is Beijing time (UTC+8:00). Some of the administrative regions still keep their own time arrangements. There are no daylight saving time adjustments for 2016.

China’s mobile network has good coverage, but very slow Internet speed. While travelling in China, you can use public Wi-Fi which has wide coverage across the country. Please be aware that in China, there is no access to many of the social media networks such as Facebook or Twitter. Rates for international calls are extremely expensive. Buying a local SIM card or signing up for a special international plan might save you money.

Currency and purchases

The Chinese official currency is the renminbi. The yuan is the basic unit of the renminbi. Cards might be accepted in larger restaurants and larger stores, while small shops, taxis and markets expect you to pay cash. The good point is that ATMs are widespread in China.

Accommodation & car rental

In big cities, there are plenty of options for places to stay during your trip, ranging from boutique five-star hotels to youth hostels and guesthouses. The variety of options might be a bit limited in small cities.

You will need a Chinese licence to drive in China as an International Driver's Permit (IDP) is not valid for this country. You will not be allowed to rent a car and drive yourself.
