Mongolia

Probably one of the less discovered places on Earth, Mongolian nature can be truly breathtaking. Tourists can still immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the ancient Mongol Empire and feel the immense power of former leader Genghis Khan.

Time and mobile connection

Officially, the Mongolian time zone is 8 hours ahead of London. However, the far western provinces use UTC+07:00. During the summer, the country switches to Daylight Saving Time (plus one more hour).

Your home phone company might charge you roaming fees, so check roaming rates with your mobile provider before travelling to Mongolia, or buy a local prepaid (no contract) plan. There’s good connection in big cities; however, there’s no signal in remote areas.

Currency and purchases

The Mongolian Tugrik (MNT) is the official currency of the country, and can be changed at local banks. You won’t be able to obtain Mongolian Tugriks outside Mongolia. Although international currency might be accepted in some places in the big cities, you will need Tugriks for any spending in the countryside.

Accommodation & car rental

Mongolia has a wide range of accommodation to offer. In big cities you can easily find a hotel or private rental houses and apartments. But true connoisseurs of tradition shouldn’t miss a chance to indulge in the Mongolian lifestyle and stay at tiny gers (traditional yurts).

Renting a car in Mongolia’s big cities is quite easy. There is a choice of vehicles and prices from local and international companies. However, please bear in mind that only some sections of roads are paved.
